Toad Tuning

Background

Just west of this letterbox is Cedar Bog State Nature Preserve, an Ohio Historical Society property. Each year, Cedar Bog hosts a Toad Tuning event. On the first spring night that is 60 degrees Fahrenheit, the bog’s toads come out of the woods to return to the place where they were born, and sing to find a mate. Cedar Bog’s toads are famous for the loudness of their singing. Some years the event is a spectacle and a cacophony. Other years the weather doesn't cooperate and it is something that you barely notice.

You can request to be included in a telephone call list for Cedar Bog’s Toad Tuning by emailing: cedarbog@earthlink.net.

To Find the Box

The Toad Tuning Letterbox is located south of Urbana, OH, near the intersection of Route 68 and Woodburn Road. There is a large OHS sign for Cedar Bog at this intersection. Turn west onto Woodburn Road, cross the railroad tracks, turn right into the small parking lot of the bike path, and park your car. (The letterbox is not on Cedar Bog property, so don’t drive all the way to the Bog.)

From the bike path, walk westbound down Woodburn Road. About a third of the way to the Bog entrance, you will see a large multi-trunked tree on the south (left) side of the road. Now look to the large single tree east of the multi-trunked tree (i.e. closer to you). The Toad Tuning letterbox is located behind (on the south side of) this tree, hidden at its base underneath rocks and sticks. The bike path and the bog generate a lot of traffic, so please be discrete. Please rehide it carefully after stamping in.

Note: this stamp is a re-carve of the original which was planted in 2007. The original box went missing after 10 years, so we recarved the stamp and revised its location in 2019.
