This letterbox is located north up the Kona Coast before the Waikoloa turnoff. Go north on the lower road 1/2 mile past mile marker 79. There is a large grove of palms and then a little further north, one lone palm tree. You can see it from the highway. Park by the highway and hike to the beach (about a half a mile) to find the letterbox. The beach is public access.

There is a "road/driveway" that you will follow up to the gate for the fancy privately owned home. Take the path to the right before you get to the gate. The path is mostly smaller stones/lava rocks. We do NOT recommend wearing rubber slippahs (flip flops/thongs) for this trip. The lava along this path is called a'a lava. As in AH! AH! it's sharp and painful if you step on it! If one of your slippahs dies, it will be an unpleasant hike out to your car.

Follow the path to the right of the the barbed wire fence until you get to the black sand beach. Enjoy the beach and the view! On a clear day you can see the peak of Haleakala on Maui poking up through the clouds as you look past the lone palm.

When you are ready to leave, start at the northwest corner of the private property, where there is a driftwood fencepost that starts the barbed wire fence on the way back to the highway. Follow the fence counting the white metal stakes only. When you reach the 20th white stake, look to the left of the path. There are two round white coral rock eyes and a big coconut nose about 30 feet away.

Take 5-6 CAREFUL steps towards the face. There is a large puka (hole) in the lava. Step CAREFULLY into the hole and look back towards the post. Under a rock ledge with one seriously out of place rounded rock on top is the letterbox. Please rehide well with loose lava rocks.
