Bring your own ink & pen

10/25/08 - Pack Dog 1 is missing. Will replace in the spring of 2009 & then post. Pack Dog #2 is still okay.

Clues:

Hi! My name is Bear and I am a titled Pack Dog through Dog Scouts of America. While at Dog Scout camp, Mom & I learned how to backpack together and what safety items I need to carry in my own pack. My very favorite place to hike is Mackinac Island. While placing this letterbox, I finished the last few miles I needed in order to log over 100 miles.

These two boxes will involve lots of hiking – wear appropriate clothing & footgear. This route can also be biked. Allow plenty of time, as the ferries run seasonal hours – check the ferry schedule so you won’t get stranded on the island! You will need to take a ferry to get to Mackinac Island. There are several other letterboxes on the way to Pack Dog 1, so be sure to check those out as well. A trail map will be helpful and can be obtained at the Visitors Center on the island.

Pack Dog 1 starts by heading west from the ferry docks (turn left on the main street). Follow the boardwalk and Lakeshore Rd until you reach British Landing. British Landing is 3.5 miles from town. Go up British Landing Rd and take a left on a large, gravel road. This is unmarked, but you can’t miss it. The road will curve very quickly and take the trail that heads off from the road. This is Scott’s Rd. This road is marked on the trail map, but UNMARKED in reality. Follow Scott’s Rd for approximately 2 miles. After 1 mile, you will pass a large, red barn. After the 2nd mile, you will go up a slight hill and come to a peaceful intersection.

Stand at this intersection and read the sign. 10 steps behind the sign you will see a tree trunk and there you will find Pack Dog 1. Take a rest here.

Pack Dog 2 starts where Pack Dog 1 left off. Continue along Scott’s Rd to Leslie Rd. Turn right on Leslie then left on British Landing/Garrison Rd. Continue along Garrison Rd until you come to a trail that a dog such as myself would take – the trail head is MARKED with the name of my trail. Turn down this trail and immediately look for the 1st large pine tree on the left.. This is where you will find Pack Dog 2.
