The Fort Mill Ridge site contains some of the best preserved Civil War trenches in the nation. It was built over a site previously used by Confederate artillery and defends the approaches to Romney and the South Branch of the Potomac River.

Units stationed here included troops from the 54th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, Battery E of the (West) Virginia Light Artillery, and Co. A, 22nd Pennsylvania (Ringold) Cavalry.

A Civil War museum relating to the construction and use of the Fort Mill Ridge trenches is located within the Taggart Hall Civil War Museum and Visitors Center on the corner of High Street and Gravel Lane in downtown Romney.

Directions:

Westbound
From the traffic light in the center of Romney, WV, drive West on US Rt. 50. Cross the bridge over the South Branch of the Potomac River in 1 mile. Continue on Rt. 50 for another 1.5 miles and turn left over a brand new bridge. Turn left and drive up a very steep hill to the Fort Mill Ridge parking lot.

Eastbound
From the Patterson Creek Bridge just East of Burlington, WV, travel East on US Rt. 50. Cross Mill Creek twice and when you have traveled 8 miles, turn right over a very new bridge. Turn left and drive up a very steep hill to the Fort Mill Ridge Parking lot.

Enjoy walking into the Central Redoubt and reading about the history of the fort.

Leave the parking lot and start back down the hill to the left turn. Take this road to a small parking area on the left. This is the back side of the fort.
Begin at the middle of the gate and walk at 340 degrees for 14 paces to a faint path into the woods. From there, it is 280 degrees 15 paces to a burned stump, then 200 degrees 18 paces to the base of a downed tree with an SPObark.

Please rehide carefully.
