Allow me to take you for a walk through a part of Hinsdale’s central business district. Our journey starts at 33 South Washington Street. This building was built in 1900. The cantilevered corner tower and witch’s cap roof are remaining elements of its original construction.

Right down the street is 43 South Washington. This building, built in 1901, features patterned brick, egg-and-dart stone moldings and a floral cast-iron beam. These are details that most people passing along on the sidewalk do not pay attention to.

Take out your cell phone and walk to 49 South Washington. Once upon a time in 1894, Hinsdale’s first telephone was installed at this location. The building has since been remodeled, but while you stand outside on the sidewalk with your cell phone, just imagine the novelty of talking on a telephone for the first time!

Quality shoes are what you will find if you visit 52 South Washington. A harness shop used to be located at the site and now it is a shoe shop. This building, built in 1898, has housed a shoe shop for over a hundred years.

Unusual fish-scale shingles and a cantilevered turret are original elements of the building at 54 South Washington. This late-Victorian style building was built in 1892. The windows and patterned brick frieze below the tin roof cornice are also originals.

East First Street also boasts several building with historical interest. The symmetrical building, built in 1925, at 11-21 East First Street features noteworthy stone details.

Sirens used to sound from the location at 25 East First Street. This present building, built in 1935, rests on the site of Hinsdale’s first fire station and village hall that was built in 1887.

Terra-cotta decorations adorn the theater building located at 27-31 East First Street. Although remodeled, some interior architectural details remain. I hope you have enjoyed your walk through downtown Hinsdale! Your treasure is located inside one of these fine buildings. The first letter of each of the 8 paragraphs is your clue. Ask at the counter, and the box is yours for stamping!
