This box was originally planted by LaChola in March 2004. As part of the Historic Letterbox Restoration Group, I have adopted this box to keep it active. The stamp and logbook are original as are most of the clues.

This box is planted on the newly renamed "Rachel Carson Greenway" trail, formerly known as the Northwest Branch trail (Burnt Mills West Park access point). The trail was rededicated on March 20, and I took advantage of a stamp I'd been holding onto a while to plant this very appropriate vernal equinox box.
From the Washington Beltway, take Rt. 29 North. After about a mile, you will pass Crestmore Drive. Then on the left you will see WSSC/M-NCPPC buildings with a dam behind them. Take a left into the parking lot of the WSSC/M-NCPPC buildings. This trail is slightly rugged and you need to watch your footing. Not stroller accessible and not appropriate for young children.

The Clues:

Go up the hill and around the dam works. Stone steps lead further up to the trail that skirts the ridge (there is an alternate route along the river bank which you can take on the way back). Follow the ridge trail, (powder blue blazes), along for about a mile (about 25 minutes at a comfortable hiking pace). At this point the trail descends and the Northwest Branch comes into full view on the left. You will also see a huge lichen covered boulder half way down the hill towards the water. In front of you, on the right, is a medium sized tree with a 3-4 ft. split at the bottom of it. (If you look up the hill a little ways, you will see a rotten tree stump – this was the original placement of this box!) Stand with this split tree to your back and walk 25 paces directly uphill to a large Oak with a SPOR behind it.

This is a really terrific trail that continues on for another 2 miles or so. At the far end is a bridge that crosses the branch and you can take a parallel trail back, for a vigorous round-trip hike of about 6 miles.
