One of my first letter boxes was called Checkmate. It is now archived as I believe Rubaduc and Gizz were the first and only ones to find it before it was vandalized. I kept the template, and carved a new stamp, but just haven’t been able to get back out to the area lately so I have decided to replant it in one of my favorite hiking areas, and archive the original.

Checkmate II is located in Gay City State Park, one of my favorite areas to do short hikes with the goats. There are many trails throughout the park. From Memorial Day to Labor Day there is a fee. As it can change I suggest viewing the following links to get full information on the park, and a map of the park.

When I planted this box, the park was closed for the season in that the main gate is closed. There is still full access to the park, but only the winter parking lot in front of the park is open and the facilities are closed. (Although it appears the composting toilets are open year round).

This box is located off the Yellow Trail. The shortest way to get to it is to take the Yellow Trail off the blue trail. However, if you want a nice loop, about 2.25 miles, do Troop 610, which I also planted today, then look for Checkmate II

Directions coming from the Red Trail:

Follow the Yellow Trail in and you will eventually cross a large bridge, and see a pond appear on your left. There is a spot where you can sit on a bench and enjoy the view which includes a beaver lodge, and if you’re lucky like I was, and abundance of water fowl.

Still overlooking the pond as you continue up ahead on your left you will see two large boulders. Go 40 paces (one step, not two), and look to your right for a large boulder in the woods. It is the size of a small car, has a large horizontal crevice with a tree growing out of it. Go to the boulder, about 24 paces in. Checkmate II is hiding in the crevice next to the tree.

Directions coming from the Blue Trail:

Follow the Yellow Trail until just as you come up over a small hill the pond will appear on your right. Continue on the trail until you see two large boulders on your right. From there turn around and go back the way you just came, 40 paces (one step, not two), and look to your right for a large boulder in the woods. It is the size of a small car, has a large horizontal crevice with a tree growing out of it. Go to the boulder, about 24 paces in. Checkmate II is hiding in the crevice next to the tree.
