A spectacular view of Monterey, Fisherman’s Wharf and Cannery Row across a portion of Monterey Bay awaits you at the site of this letterbox.

The key to finding the letterbox is to locate a concrete slab measuring about 15’ x 15’ from which you can take in the spectacular “Monterey City View”. As you stand on the slab and look toward Fisherman’s Wharf there is a large stump of a fallen tree behind you. On the back side of the tree stump near the ground line is a vertical gash that is pointing to a hollowed out area underneath. Although there may be some lose debris (placed by nature and prior letterboxers) and dampness (depending on the weather), within 12” of the opening you’ll find the letterbox.

The concrete slab is located at about 20 feet above beach level and is easily reached from the beach by a well traveled, opening in the dunes. You can get to this spot from three different directions but our preferred route is by using the stairs (“boardwalk”) across the dunes starting from the Rec Trail where Sloat Ave. terminates at Del Monte Blvd. When you reach the beach at the bottom of the stairs, turn right (with the bay on your left) and, in about 3/10ths of a mile, you’ll find the opening in the dunes leading to the concrete slab. If you get to a point that there is a well maintained green cyclone fence topped with barbed wire on your right, you’ve gone too far.
