Backstory:
Erwin Schrödinger was a physicist who attempted to describe the strange properties of quantum mechanics with a macabre thought experiment. Imagine a box, in which we place a cat. This box also contains a hammer poised over a cyanide capsule, and a radioactive isotope which has a 50% chance of decaying in the time allotted for the experiment. We close the box. After the specified time, if the isotope has decayed, then the hammer has fallen, breaking the capsule and killing the cat. If the isotope has not decayed, then the cat is still alive. Quantum mechanics states that, until we actually open the box and observe the cat (or its remains), our poor kitty is in a state of being both alive AND dead. It only assumes one state or the other when it is observed.

This is why Erwin Schrödinger was never invited to many parties.

This is also why Erwin Schrödinger has a standing invitation to all of my parties.

Explanation:
There are actually two boxes planted in the same general area. Clues to both are printed below. One contains the stamp and logbook, and one is empty. Thanks to the help of my wife, I’m not even sure which is which. If you find them both, feel free to move the stamp and log to the other box. But please note, if you are new to the hobby: this box is unique. It is normally not acceptable to move items from one box to another (except for hitchhikers).

Clue #1 (50% chance of leading to a letterbox)

* Begin at the trailhead of the F ireline Trail at H ickory R un State Park. (This trailhead is along PA-534, about a mile or two west of the ranger station.)

* At the first Y, go left to stay on F ireline.

* Keep an eye out on the left for S kyline Trail. Head left onto S kyline.

* The trail will steadily rise. When you reach the top (not too bad, right?), you find yourself in a sort of clearing, with a behemoth 4-tree on your right.

* From this monster of a tree, walk 16 paces at 50* to a six-tree. Suspicious pile of rocks in its crook.

* Please rehide well.

Clue #2 (50% chance of leading to a letterbox)

* Head to H ickory R un State Park. Start at the trailhead for the trail marked “F” on the park map. (If you’re coming in from the west, it’s the very first parking lot on your right.)

* You’ll come to a Y soon. Head left, ignoring the unmarked trail on your right.

* The next trail you reach is marked “U” on your trail map. Take it, heading 210*, on a slight, steady uphill.

* When the trail levels off, you’ll see a large tree covered with lichen on your right.

* Continue for just a bit, until the trail pivots twice: left around a 3-tree, and right around a 4-tree.

* From the 4-tree, walk 23 paces at 70* to an eye-of-the-needle tree. Suspicious pile of rocks at its base.

* Please rehide well.
