The North Lakeland Discovery Center is "a community-based environmental learning center dedicated to exploring, preserving, and enhancing the Lakeland area's natural, cultural, and historic resources. The Center is located on a 66-acre site in the heart of northern Wisconsin's tranquil Lakeland destination region."

To get to the Discovery Center, go 1.2 miles east of Hwy 51 on County Rd. W in Manitowish Waters. When you get there, you can go into the main building and get information about all the fun activities at the Discovery Center.

When you are ready for your hunt, go to the stage overlooking the lake. Near the stage, there will be a sign with the map of the Self Guided Interpretive Trail you will be taking to get to the letterbox. To the right of the stage, you will see a sign with a snowshoe on it. That is the marker for the beginning of the trail.

While you are on the trail, you will pass several signs that tell you about the flora and fauna of the area. You will follow the arrows and snowshoe signs along the one-mile trail until you get to the “TRY TO BE A TRACKER” sign. In between the sign and the trail arrow, you will see an abandoned road. Take about 25 paces from the sign, down this road. You will see the base of a big white pine on your right.

On the left side of this tree, you will see a partial log. Under the log, you will find our letterbox! Inside the box, you will find a small memento courtesy of the Discovery Center. Please take just one. If you are there during the summer, be sure to stop and smell the sweet fern that covers the old road!

Please replace the log over the letterbox when you are done. Thank you!
