Union troops established a refueling facility on a point of land near Cross Manor. From this station, Union gunboats could patrol the Potomac River which served as a vital crossing of illegally smuggled supplies from St. Mary’s County to Confederate forces in Virginia. On November 11, 1864, the USS Tulip, a converted lighthouse tender turned gunboat, departed from Cross Manor bound for Washington, DC so that its defective boiler could be repaired. Off the coast of Piney Point, however, the boiler exploded and the ship subsequently sank. Eight sailors who perished in the explosion could not be identified and were buried on the shore of St. Inigoes Creek near the Cross Manor Union facility. In 1940, a small monument was erected to mark their graves. Today, the site is publicly accessible.

Take Route 5 South, past St. Mary's College. Turn right onto Villa Road. Turn Right onto Grayson Road continue till you see a dirt road on your left (towards the right is Cross Manor Rd). Follow the dirt road till it dead ends - and park on your right near the wooden memorial sign. Walk towards the water and the monument. Take a moment and read the "Disaster at Ragged Point". Turn left and walk straight towards the water into the brush. At the edge of the cliff, look to the right for a dead tree covered in vines about 5 paces away. At the base of the tree in a hole created by the roots lies your treasure. Please be respectful of the neighbors and wave to Ted Koppel who lives on the left on your way out.
