Reported MISSING 07/30/2010, confirmed MISSING 02/19/2012. I'm leaving these clues because the cenote is such a wonderful place to go.

If you are in Mexico on the Yucatan Peninsula, often referred to as the Mayan Riviera, I hope you get a chance to visit Tulum and my favorite small town of Tankah Tres. Tankah Tres is located in Tankah Bay a short distance north of Tulum. There is a hotel there called the Tankah Inn where I have stayed a couple of years for my week vacation, but this year we rented a house called Casa 7th Cielo, both of which I can highly recommend. The small Casa Cenote hotel complex and restaurant were closed when I was there November 2007 due to hurricane damage, but the restaurant is wonderful when it’s open, my favorite in the area. They were removing debris and working on it, so it should be open soon. Directly across the road from the Casa Cenote is the Manatee Cenote, a wonderful fresh water swimming hole that would be a super respite from hot weather and a fun place to take a break and nab a letterbox. The cenote flows under the road and the restaurant directly out into the ocean; people were getting their tanks on the week I was there and preparing to dive from the cenote out into the ocean through the “tube” – not an experience I envy, but might be fun for some. Legend has it that there is a manatee in there, but I have never seen it. Anyway, enjoy the swim and the area if you go, and bring your snorkel gear. You can swim or snorkel back into the mangroves and enjoy the birds that are all over the place.

DRIVING DIRECTIONS: Traveling south on the main highway from Cancun to Tulum, take a left turn before you get to Tulum (heading east towards the ocean) at the sign for Blue Sky, Casa Cenote, and Tankah Tres. Count the electric poles on your right (south side of road) and pull off to the side of the road at the third one to park. Walk across the road to the pole directly opposite this one on the north side of the road, and look at its base on the east side under a few rocks for the letterbox. Take the box to the cenote with you if you want, where it will be more pleasant to stamp in; continue on the road towards the ocean, turn left at the corner (your only option) and go less than a mile to the cenote on the left (you’ll pass Casa 7th Cielo and the Tankah Inn on your right as you drive); you can see the cenote from the road, and there is a little palapa roof with a few chairs underneath and a wooden pole fence but no sign saying “Manatee Cenote,” only a sign telling not to use sunscreen in there. To put the letterbox back on your way out, as soon as you turn the corner and can see the highway again count the poles from that corner on your right (you would be heading west at that point towards the highway) and put the letterbox back at the 7th one.
