The Wickett Mare
From the Wendell State Forest Headquarters, walk down the park road (Laurel Drive on USGS map) past Ruggles Pond on your right, and continue to the junction of Wickett Pond Road and Jerusalem Road. Continuing down Wickett Pond Road, go about 50 steps or until you come to a double-trunk oak tree on your left. Take a compass bearing of 20˚ N and then take about 20 steps. Step very carefully and watch your footing. You’ll be at the edge. Look around the perimeter for the biggest tree stump closest to the edge. From the tree stump, take a bearing of 90˚ and walk approximately 15 steps. Carefully walk down in and look for a large “cap stone” in the north west corner. There you will find the mare in her old barn.
