Difficulty: easy to slightly moderate trail walking with some loose gravel (my 3-year-old did it with minimal assistance)
Walk time: approximately 1/4 mile, 10 minutes one way.
Stamp: hand-carved
When preparing for a camping trip to Lake Pleasant I tried to locate a letterbox in the area for our family to do. In my hasty, last-minute search I came up empty-handed, but threw our letterboxing stuff in with the camping gear anyway. On our last morning, I decided to place a box, which would be my first plant. This box was put together with things that I had on hand during the camping trip. It is rather primitive and it does not include an ink pad; please bring your own to use when stamping in. The box does include 1st, 2nd and 3rd finder goodies!
To the trailhead:
The trail to this microbox begins at the Lake Pleasant Visitor Center. Take I-17 north out of Phoenix to Carefree Highway (state highway 74). Exit and turn left (westbound)on Hwy 74. Turn off Hwy 74 on Castle Hot Springs Road and follow signs to Lake Pleasant Visitor Center. There is a small fee ($5 per car) to enter.
To the box:
Once at the Visitor Center, find the Road Runner trailhead located north of the building. Follow the trail and enjoy the view as you hike to the Hohokam Hilltop, a spot obviously marked with a metal sign. This is the remains of an actual 2-room house built by the Hohokam tribe that lived between 300-1200 A.D.
There is a Palo Verde tree to the east of the larger of the two rooms. Hiding beneath this tree, in a pile of rocks you will find this microbox. Be cautious of desert citters when reaching for the box.
Please be sure the contents are resealed and well-hidden when you are finished logging in. Have fun and please let me know if this box needs attention.
