Go to Swallow Falls State Park and park just past entrance in Falls Trail Entrance Lot.
Enter the Falls Trail
Follow the sign toward Swallow Falls.
You will pass a hollowed out tree which you can climb into on your left.
Go down the long set of steps on your left, and when there is a "fork" in the steps continue down to where you can see swallow falls.
Count the number of steps in the set of steps just past the fork- remember this number.
After looking over Swallow Falls go back up the steps to the "fork"and this time go right (not up) heading for Muddy Creek Falls.
You will walk for a long time- if you have small children,-not too far if all the kids are grown.
You will pass an informational sign on your left titled "Towering Giants"- read this sign- how old do they think these trees are? - remember this number.
Soon (or after a long time if the kids are getting tired) you will see the beautiful Muddy Creek Falls.
Climb up the stairs and walk out close to the Falls(carefully)- Look upstream for an old footbridge.
Get to the bridge however you can and stand on it with your back to the falls and look as on a clock face to- the number of steps below the fork minus 1. _______o'clock.
You should see a "Towering Giant" that is-the number of years old the trees are supposed to be from that sign divided by the number of steps- paces from the edge of the bridge.
There is a large stone at the base of this tree with a space beneath it which in the winter would have been a great place to hide a letterbox- but we thought in the spring there might be water flowing there so we didn't hide it there- but don't despair you are close.
Stand on the stone and look for the closest tree to you with no bark at the base.
The box is hidden behind a rock underneath an upward curve in the base of that tree- hopefully not underwater.
You can now follow the trail at the top of the waterfall back to the parking lot (not too far even with tired kids)
