This box has been pulled due to maintenance and will be replaced as soon as possible.

In May of 1901, my Great-Grandfather, Henry Uebelhor, purchased a general store in St. Henry, IN. Henry, his wife, Laura, and their children lived in the back part of the store until they expanded in 1917. (The baby in the picture is my Grandma.) Most any item could be purchased in the H.M. Uelbelhor General Store. He also sold fertilizer and farm machinery. Henry owned 40 acres on the east and south edge of St. Henry and his cows furnished milk for most of the town. The first radios in Dubois County were sold at the H.M. Uebelhor store for less then $50.00.

Being the good businessman that he was, Henry realized that many families did not have an opportunity to come to town to shop. Therefore, he operated a huckster truck that was driven around countryside by my Great-Aunt Milt and Great-Uncle Lee. Many people could not pay for goods so Henry traded goods for eggs and chickens.

A large fire destroyed the store in February of 1955. The store was not rebuilt.

To find the HM Uebelhor General Store box, Take the US-231 exit- EXIT 57- toward HUNTINGBURG / DALE / JASPER. Turn LEFT onto US-231 / IN-45. Turn RIGHT onto W 1100 SOUTH. (You will see the sign for St. Henry)

Follow the main road into town. Look for the church steeple. Park in the left lot of St. Henry Catholic Church. Look for the four trees that mark the entrance to where the original church stood. Go to the benches. There you will find a box that holds a guide. The box will take some effort to open.

The guide will tell you where to find the graves of Henry and Laura. At Henry and Laura's headstone take a reading of 180. Go to the bushes and look under a rock at the base.

Please return the guide to the box by the trees. If you look across the street from the church you will see a brick home. The lot to the left that holds the Bradford Pears is where the H.M. Uebelhor General Store once stood.
