This letterbox is placed in honor of my “granddogger”, Mia. My daughter carved the stamp. Mia was rescued from the streets of Norwich. My daughter adopted her from N.E.C.T.A.R. at 5 months of age. Mia is now 8 years old and just as sweet as ever. She shares her home with a pitbull mix sister and 2 cats.
From Route 195 in Mansfield Center, turn onto Cemetery Road. You will pass a cemetery on the right and then on the left. Take your first left on to Echo Road and travel just about .1 mile to a small pull off on the right side of the road. Park here and start down the well defined trail. ** Be sure to bring clues for Flutterby Flew By’s Box of the Month: Mansfield, CT. Through November 2008, a new box will be hidden here the first 3 weeks of each month.
It is a 20 minute walk to Mia’s letterbox, mostly through a forest of huge white pines and some deciduous trees with an under-story of young white pines. Follow the white, intermittent trail signs on a very well defined trail. Pass a kettle hole on your left as the trail bends right. Come to a “Y” and stay to the right. Come to a “T” and take a left. In a few minutes there will be a clearing visible through the trees on the left side of the trail. At the fork, go right. The path will bend to the right and start to narrow. You will pass a 20-25 foot tall dead tree with its top broken off. It is close by the trail on the right side. On the left, keep a lookout for a good sized white pine tree marked by a faint yellow blaze.
You will come to a downed tree across the trail. The middle section has been cut out so you can easily pass through. Stop in this opening. Walk 11 steps, left foot count only. Stop. Look to your right for a large oak tree. There is a bulge on the left side at the bottom of the trunk which is covered with moss. The tree is 6 steps off the trail. The box is hidden behind it, covered with broken pieces of branches and leaves. After stamping in, return to your car the way that you came.
