**July 2011 box gone missing again! Will replant sometime this summer.**

The Laguna de Santa Rosa is a 14-mile-long floodplain of the Russian River, with oak woodlands and vernal pools, stretching from Santa Rosa in the north to Cotati in the south. For the past 150 years, it has been diked for farming, filled with sewage treatment ponds and otherwise abused by human use. But starting around 1990, efforts have been made to restore and protect the Laguna, and this letterbox is at the site of a small park celebrating this restoration. For more information, see

Directions:

From downtown Sebastapol, take Hwy. 12 East about a ¼ mile to the intersection of Morris St., turn north on Morris. This will take you past Laguna Youth Park and its ballfields. At 425 Morris, you will see the Youth Annex building. You can park to the right of this building at the Labyrinth of Life (a cool labyrinth and worth a side trip), or park on the left of the building where the trailhead is. Pick up a nature trail guide from the box and start your journey. Be sure to take in the view at the highpoint of the Sonoma Valley, the Mayacama Mountains and Mt. St. Helena. Marker 6 has your prize under walnut bark. Continue your trip along the creek to the end of the trail. The whole thing is maybe a ¼ mile long. Along the creek you might spot egrets or black-crowned night herons in the trees. Look carefully! If you are here May-early October, you might be able to cross the seasonal bridge and hike some more. Enjoy your visit.
