This is a Christmas present from the Pink Ladies to our fellow Letterboxers. Merry Christmas 2007!

Tucson’s first master-planned community, Winterhaven, hosts a spectacular light display during the holiday season. 2007 celebrates the 57th anniversary of the Festival of Lights. It has been held continuously since 1949 except for one year during the energy crisis of the ‘70s when the residents voted to stay dark. The subdivision was the brainchild of developer/founder C.B. Richards, who was inspired to create the Festival after visiting a similar display in Beverly Hills, California in the ‘30s. Richards was intent on creating holiday magic. He purchased the magnificent allepo pines from a local nursery that was going out of business and planted them at regular intervals throughout the neighborhood in close proximity to electrical connections in preparation of the holiday light display. Richards not only donated the first set of lights, but he named the main street Christmas Avenue.

Visitors to the Festival will see Winterhaven’s majestic trees decorated in dazzling lights and will enjoy seeing wonderful decorations and lights on the homes during two weeks in December. Many people walk the streets to enjoy the sights, but visitors may also take a hay wagon carriage or trolley through the neighborhood. Cars and buses are allowed on designated nights.

Tucson Electric Power (TEP) is helping Winterhaven improve the energy efficiency of the Festival through the use of new light emitting diode (LED lights. All 30,000 traditional bulbs used to decorate and light up the large trees have been replaced with the new LED bulbs. The new 0.1-watt lights require much less energy than the old 7-watt bulbs, reducing energy consumption by more than 98%. This upgrade will avert the need for energy production that would release more than 30,000 pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Thanks to TEP, 2007 will mark the start of a brighter, better-and greener Festival!

If you plan to visit during the Festival, be aware there are no official parking areas, but there is free side street parking and nearby businesses offer pay-parking in their lots. There is not an entrance fee to the Festival of Lights. However, the event is a fundraiser for the Tucson Community Food Bank. Please consider bringing canned food or making a donation when arriving. Food Bank volunteers will be at the Country Club and Ft. Lowell entrances.

To find the FIRST letterbox:
Go to the main entrance of Winterhaven and locate the entry monument on the northeast corner. Walk behind the monument and stand so the tall pin is at your back. Directly in front of you, in the corner at your feet, the box is hidden beneath the pine needles and a layer of rocks.
