Difficulty: Moderate
Location: A ¼ mile hike from parking.
Elevation: Probably a hundred foot increase especially in first fifty yards.
Not advised for handicappers, though with some ambulatory ability, attainable.
Store stamp: Bring your own stamp pad, log book, stamp, oh, and a rag or towel to wipe off the box.

This box is hidden in a park in a remote area of the city of Athens, Ohio. An Athens/Athens County map, available for free from the Visitor’s Bureau office on East State Street. In fact, this location is just two blocks away from a good starting point for the quest for this LB.

Take East State Street east, until you find a residential street, Avon Place, that intersects to the north only. Take Avon Place about three blocks north to the end.

Now that you’re at Sells Park, there are about six parking spaces before you. A carved sign here will confirm you are in Sells Park.

There are two improved trails leading up, away from this starting hike point. Both contain some fairly steep inclines, one with landscape timbers or railroad ties holding up the hillside, acting as steps. You can choose either trail, but we chose the right one, the Athens Trail, marked with a white arrowhead on red. Both trails have extremely clear painted blaze markings so you can’t go wrong with either choice. Your quest lies on the Rockhouse trail loop, so you will eventually leave the Athens Trail about halfway up to the LB.

Walk up and continue above the pond on the right. This makes for a nice view. There are some rocky cliffs ahead, but you will not want to take any fork or trail that leads to an overlook. In fact, if you are confronted by a rocky outcropping, retrace your steps. Stay on the clearly marked trails.

You will rejoin the Rockhouse Trail (marked with a white arch on yellow blaze) and after a ways that trail exits. Leave the Athens Trail at this point and follow the Rockhouse Trail. (See, we told you both paths would work!)

There are two wooden foot bridges on this loop trail. Your quest lies near the first footbridge. As soon as you cross the bridge, look to the south (left) for a double stem tree on the downhill side less than 2 yards away. It contains the letterbox. You will need to leave the path to walk around to access the hiddie-hole near the base, behind the root. You should see the camo-tape wrapped Letterbox inside without much difficulty.
Your quest is inside this LB.

There is no opportunity to move to a bench or other location with the stamp, so do your log business right here. Please reseal the baggies and return all contents back into the letter box, closing it up tight for the next person.

Upon completion, continue onward on the trail, and you’ll discover one or two other junctions with clearly marked directions how to return to the parking area. You’ll find it slightly shorter to continue onward than to return the way you came. [There is another stamp, just about 40 paces away, on the southside, some five yards off the trail. It is wired into the wooden box that is next to a Poplar tree with three stems. This is a mature tree. If you've reached the second footbridge, you've gone a bit too far!]

If missing or the logbook is full, please advise us. This was one of our first letterboxes. Enjoy!
