The Spirit of Moo

Once there was a dairy farm out in the country in NE Tarrant County, McPherson’s Dairy, with barns and silos and lots of black and white cows. Nearby were pastures of horses and other small farms. As the years went by, more and more people moved to the area, and the farms disappeared as more and more large houses appeared. Finally, all that remained of the once-large dairy farm were a few old barns and outbuildings and a tall silo, in between neighborhoods of large, impressive houses. Where the cows used to pasture, a park was built, with lovely trails to walk, playing fields, picnic areas and playgrounds for children. A large fire station resembling a red barn was built facing the road near the silo, and an old cabin and barn remained in place to remind us of the farm and the cows that had once been here. But listen! What is that sound? Is that just the sighing of the wind through the trees and across the park grasslands, or could it be … The Spirit of Moo?

To find The Spirit of Moo, find the location referred to above on McDonwell School Road in Colleyville. Park near the silo and follow the walking trail west as it goes by the old cabin. Stop to explore this lovely old relic, then continue on the trail past the barns. As the trail curves north, notice the embracing trees to your left? Curious! But don’t be distracted; continue to follow the trail curving to the north and then back to the east. Soon you’ll pass a green bench and a short rock wall will appear alongside the trail. Continue to the east end of this rock wall. Stop at the end of the wall and take 5 steps (not paces) back along the wall to a large cluster of crooked trees on the south side of the trail. Tucked carefully out of sight beneath the large crooked trunk on the south side of the tree trunks you’ll find The Spirit of Moo. Remember, as always, to use caution in case of snakes in the woods and grass.
