The Rose

An easy, short hike off of Rt. 1 in Charlestown. To Burlingame Campground: take rt. 1, follow the signs for the Camping area NOT the picnic area. To Kettle Pond Visitor's Center: follow signs on Rt. 1 (both will be on the south bound side)

From Burlingame (clues #1) the walk is about 1 mile each way, from Kettle Pond Visitor's Center (clues #2) only about ¼ of a mile. This box was created in remembrance of working at Burlingame this past summer.

From Burlingame Campground:

Park in the parking lot before the ranger station. During camping season it can be difficult to get through the front gates due to security measures, so it is best to go off season or walk in. (You can drive in, but you must be renting a campsite or request a pass from the park office).

From the parking lot: head through the yellow gates and into the park. You will walk for a while along the paved road. Look for a smiling white pine tree on your left as you walk along. Soon you will come to a dirt road on your right with a wooden kiosk. If you read the kiosk, you will see a map with directions to Kettle Pond Visitor's Center.

Head down the dirt road, past campsites, until you find the brown sign (on your right) which will lead you to Kettle Pond. Stay straight on this path, following the signs. For a ways you will find yourself walking along the backside of multiple campsites until you reach the sign that says “Entering Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge.” Now you're getting close.

Continue until you reach a sudden steep ridge. Just before this you may notice an oak tree top that has toppled over. On the top of this little ridge, you should see a mountain laurel to your right, and just past it is a barely visible and unmarked path. Take approximately 16 paces down the path and look to your right. Down from the ridge you can see the upside down oak tree top, but before it and much closer to you, you should see a double oak tree still standing at 280 degrees. Take 10 paces in this direction to the double tree and look around the other side to find your rose.

From Kettle Pond Visitor's Center:

Park in the Kettle Pond parking lot. Make sure to visit the center if it is open: there are many amazing exhibits about Rhode Island's habitats. From the parking lot, head away from the Vistor's Center to the main path towards the back of the parking area. At the kiosk there will be maps-- feel free to explore other parts of Kettle Pond after you have found your letterbox.

Head down the main trail and take the first left. There was a sign that said “Burlingame Trail” but it has disappeared. Head straight down the trail which turns from fine gravel to a more earthy mixture. Only a short ways from here you will reach a sudden steep ridge. Once on top of the ridge: look to your left. Just before the mountain laurel, take approximately 16 steps, then stop. To your right and down the hill you should be able to see a toppled over oak tree top. Closer to you (approx. 10 paces), and at about 280 degrees there is a double oak tree. Walk around to the other side of the tree to find the rose.
