***10/16/2009 The box may have gone missing***

Difficulty: Easy
Walk Time: about 2 minutes
Stamp: Hand-carved
Book: Hand-made

1) Drive on 188.
- If you get onto 188 from 87, you’ll drive over a large steel arch bridge (with the
Roosevelt dam to your right). (If you’re coming from 88 (Apache Trail), you’ll
come out where the bridge is to your left. Take a Right onto 188)
From there, you’ll drive a little over 4 miles. You will pass Tonto National Monument on you right (if you have time and money to spare, I highly recommend you check this place out!). About 1 mile from there, you’ll begin to see blue signs on your right for a Scenic View pull off. Turn Right into the Scenic View.
- If you get onto 188 from Highway 60, you’ll drive about 20 miles before you come to the small town of Roosevelt (there’s a gas station to your right and a post office to your left). (If you’re coming off of 288, you’ll turn right onto 188 and pass through the town of Roosevelt).
From Roosevelt, you’ll drive maybe 5 or 6 miles until you see a blue sign on your right for a Scenic View pull off. Turn Left into the Scenic View.
2) Park in one of the parking spaces.
3) After the last parking space (the one with the handicap sign in front of it), you will find a paved area with 2 signs nearly facing one another. One sign is about the USDA Forest Service and the other is about Tonto National Monument.
4) Go past these signs, over the paved road and into another paved section. Here, you will find a sign about the Tonto National Monument Cliff Dwellings. Look up and check out the Upper Cliff Dwelling in the mountainside.
5) Stand at the end of the pavement. A gray and white boulder should be nearest to you on your right (further to your right should be a large red boulder). On your left should be the sign about the cliff dwellings. Start off the pavement and take about 15 steps toward the fence line. There is a cluster of Jojoba bushes to your right. Go to the last Jojoba bush (There is a gap in the bushes as they head towards the fence. There is a Jojoba bush on the fence line, but that is not the one. You want the last bush before the gap). Search within the bush (next to a dead trunk), under a pile of rocks.
6) Please be discreet. I recommend you take the box back to your car and deal with the stamping away from curious eyes. This isn’t a heavily visited spot, but during the middle of the day, there could be a couple other people there.
7) Please hide well under the rocks.
8) Since I am unable to check on my box, please contact me with an update on how my letterbox is doing!
