Oswegatchie Hills Nature Preserve - Rt 161 - Main Entrance is in Veterans Field, Niantic, CT

This is about a 2 mile hike and the boxes are not close together.
UPDATE 7/19/2010 – Clues have been changed to reflect landmark changes. All boxes are in their places, nice and safe.

Jacob invited all his friends to his house for a birthday celebration. When they arrived, he said, “Hey! How about we go on an adventure? Somewhere new and exciting to explore!” Princess Atta, Flik, Buzz Lightyear, Woody and Jack all jumped for joy and agreed to explore a mysterious nature preserve they had never heard of before in Niantic, Connecticut called Oswegatchie Hills Nature Preserve. They printed a map of the preserve from the internet and off they went singing and laughing in anticipation.

There were so many trails to explore and they couldn’t decide where to start. Jacob came up with a marvelous idea! “Why don’t we play hide and seek? I’ll hide my eyes, count to twelve and then I’ll come and find you! The preserve is so big. Since there are so many trails, let’s stick to the blue and orange trails. That way I will have a better chance of finding you. The one I’m thinking of is a loop. That would be the best spot for hiding. You’ll need to start on blue to get there. And remember, don’t take any side trails or you might get lost and I’ll never be able to find you!” Everyone agreed. Jacob turned around, hid his eyes and started counting. “1…2…3…”

BOX 1 IS MISSING
All of Jacob’s friends scurried down the small embankment, walked the “planks” over the water, then up the hill and started running onto the blue trail that heads in a northeastern direction. Counting to 12 doesn’t take long and they wanted to hurry and find the best places ever to hide. (Remember – Jacob is only three years old and he hasn’t learned to count past twelve yet.) Buzz Lightyear saw the best spot to hide on the right side of the trail just after the vista on the left and past the green trail on the right. He saw a rock ledge hugging the trail and a perfect spot just left of the 2 sister tree. He yelled “Hey everyone! This is where I’m hiding! To infinity…and beyond!” Then he squeezed himself into the gap of the ledge.

Princess Atta, Flik, Woody and Jack continued on the blue trail and passing by another green blazed trail on the right. Finally they came to where another blue trail comes in from the right. “OK, we don’t want to hide too close together so let’s follow this blue trail on the right for a bit before we look for another hiding spot,” advised Princess Atta. They all agreed and turned right on blue following it up the hill then taking a left onto the blue trail at the spot where the blue/green trail goes straight. They passed by a 3 sister tree with a blaze on it on their right. Eventually the trail became solid rock for many, many feet. At the highest point, Woody stopped and shouted “Yee Haw! Found myself a spot!” and crawled under the overhanging rock located 240 degrees and 7 paces from that highest point.

The remaining group continued on blue and kept reminding each other not to take any unmarked trails, because they didn’t want to get lost and Jacob would never ever find them. They came to an intersection and Jack remembered what Jacob had said. “Jacob said to stay on blue and orange and this is part of the loop that he mentioned. Let’s take the left side of the loop rather then right ~ it’s orange now.” As they followed the orange trail, they kept looking back to see if Jacob was anywhere in sight. So far so good!

After a bit, the trail came to a stone wall and then it turned to the right and continued downhill. Queen Atta and Flik saw an awesome hiding spot on the west end of the stone wall in front of a 12 foot stump. They both saw it at the same time and couldn’t decide who should use it. Finally, they giggled, looked at each other and jumped in together leaving Jack to continue on alone. (note: this is 1 box)

Jack skipped down the hill past the Gigantic Rock and continued on orange. Eventually he came to another intersection and realized that he needed to bear south (right) so that he would be on the blue trail again. Jack missed not being in his box. To comfort himself, he quietly started singing his favorite song. “All around the Mulberry bush, the monkey chased the weasel. The monkey stopped to pull up his socks – POP goes the weasel.” He sang it over and over again until he came to smooth rock with a baby on top and he noticed an elbow tree leaning over the trail. “POP”! And he POPPED right into the spot where tree and rock meet.

Jacob had the best time with all his friends that day! He eventually found them all, but left a little something in each of their hiding spots to remind you of them and his special day at the preserve. After you find “Jack”, continue on the blue trail. Eventually you will come to another intersection where orange comes in on the right. Now you’ve completed the loop trail! Follow blue south and when you reach another blue intersection, go left ~ following until it splits just before you reach the end. Go right to get to your car.

Enjoy!
