Riders of the Purple Sage

New location!!

This box was originally planted in an Ohio library but we decided to relocate it due to the amount of traffic, and security, that libraries have. On 1/24/2012 we relocated it to a location near Sedona AZ, outside a fee area but alas, in 12/2019, highway guardrail improvements caused the box to go missing. (Imagine our chagrin: we drove past just as they were doing this!) So we recarved the same image and have now, 1/2021, planted the box inside the fee area.

The 1931 version of Riders of the Purple Sage was filmed in Sedona.

Background:
Zane Grey (1872 – 1939) was an American author best known for his pulp fiction and popular adventure novels presenting an idealized image of the rugged Old West. Raised in Zanesville OH, he attended University of Pennsylvania and eventually made his home in Pennsylvania and ultimately California. The National Road/Zane Grey Museum in Norwich, Ohio contains a sizeable exhibit about Zane Grey’s life.

Riders of the Purple Sage is Zane Grey's best-known novel. It tells the story of Jane Withersteen and her battle to overcome persecution by members of her Mormon church in 1871. Originally published in 1912, it was one of the earliest works of Western fiction and played a significant role in popularizing that genre.

Many of Zane Grey’s novels have been made into movies, Riders of the Purple Sage among them.

How to find this box:
The box is located at a location off Route 89A north of Sedona and south of Flagstaff, Arizona. These instructions assume you are traveling from Sedona northwards.

Leave Sedona via Highway 89A. Cross the Midgley Bridge. Continue on past Slide Rock State Park. At about 10 miles from Sedona, you will see the sign for the West Fork / Call of the Canyon Trailhead, the trail made famous by another of Zane Grey’s novels & movies.

If the entrance is open, pull in, pay, and park. (This is a NFS fee area, and in 2021 the entry fee is $11/car. If you get there early enough, before the pay station is open, you may be able to avoid paying.) This is a very beautiful hiking location and we recommend you explore it.

This is a busy area--pretend you are taking photographs!

Park, and start walking the concrete path toward the canyon. About 120 steps down the path you will come to a large colored information sign titled, "Avian Abundance at West Fork". To the right of the sign there is a small social trail. Sixteen steps on this trail, you will see another small trail on the left leading down to the creek. As you start the downward trail, immediately look right and down; there is a tree and split rock at the foot of the rise. Between the tree and the rock you will find the box.

Feedback welcome: If photos are needed to help find this, let us know and we will modify the clue.
