Lost and Found Again
THIS BOX IS TEMPORARILY OUT OF SERVICE FOR REPAIR, 10/18/09

While on the River in October several years ago, Sunshine and Swamp Yankee stopped to help a stranded boater. Upon pulling away, S.Y. looked down to realize that his wedding ring was gone! Lost to the river. We agonized and decided to go back at low tide 2 days later in the hopes of finding it. After several passes with Sunshine hanging out over the bow of the boat, a round object kept coming into view. You guessed it- it was Yankee’s ring!!!!! We almost tipped the boat as we both tried to reach it. This letterbox is to celebrate it’s return to his finger,(after a trip to the jeweler's to be made smaller).

This box has been moved from Hurd Park, where it was part of the 2 box, "Let's go on the river" series. It is now in the Chapman Pond Preserve on River Rd. in E. Haddam. Take River Rd. from Rte.82. Go a short distance and when the road turns sharply to the left, you will see the access road on the right. There is parking for several cars in a bit from the main road, but if it is too muddy, you may want to leave your car out on the main road.
There is one trail, a white blazed loop trail. Start by taking this trail into the woods from the parking area. Shortly you will see where the loop joins in on the right. Take the right hand trail here. After walking for a few minutes you will come to a large area of laurel.. About half way in to it, there will be a hemlock next to the trail on either side. The left one has a trail blaze on it. Stop at this point and look right- in to the woods behind the hemlock tree. Look at 30 degrees and go to the 2 sister stump, 15 steps from the trail. Look on the ground behind the stump, under leaves and sticks.

You can return to your car the way you came, or continue on the loop to do more boxing and take in the views!
