Victoria Woodhull was the first woman to run for President of the United States. She declared her candidacy in 1872, nearly 50 years before women were given the right to vote! Her running mate was former slave Frederick Douglass. She spent Election Day in jail however, because the newspaper she published ran a story about an affair involving Henry Ward Beecher (a popular pastor). She was arrested for sending obscene material through the mail.
Victoria Woodhull was born in Homer Ohio. You'll find a historical marker celebrating her birth on Homer Road west of Rt. 661. Directly across the street from the marker is the western driveway for Homer Cemetery. Turn onto the driveway. Look to your right for a large memorial to Deborah Larimore. Park here. Look to your left and find the black headstone with the deer and the horse. Behind this stone are two trees growing closely together. The letterbox is between the trees and leaning against a wire fence. It is covered with large pieces of bark.
Please rehide well.
