*****I will replace in a while****

A metate is a traditional stone surface or bowl used by Native Americans to grind food such as acorns into meal. The Metate Letterbox can be found in the vicinity of Lake Mendocino Interpretive Cultural Center at Lake Mendocino. The Cultural Center displays items and culture of the Pomo people indigenous to Mendocino County.

To locate the Cultural Center from Hwy.101, heading north after Ukiah look for the Calpella exit and take it. Head east from the exit toward Calpella. At the four-way stop keep on going straight on Moore Street past the Superette and across the train tracks. At the T follow the road to the right. Within a few hundred yards you’ll see a sign pointing left to Lake Mendocino. Follow that road, Marina Drive, as it winds up and over the hill. Turn into the first parking lot to your right, Parking Lot B, and park. Sometimes that lot is gated in which case keep driving a very short distance further and turn into Parking Lot A and park. Anyway, from Parking Lot B look up and you will see an interesting round building, the Lake Mendocino Interpretive Cultural Center. It is only open to the public during the season, but if it’s closed that won’t stop you from finding the letterbox. Walk up the ramp in the direction of the building. Note the metal handrails. When the railings cease step behind the one on the west and follow the side of the building northeast and to the corner. Turn northwest and walk about four feet to the next corner. Find the stone and slice of wood at your feet and lift them up to find the letterbox.

Be discrete and thanks for coming!
