THE GREEN MEN
These little faces were a gift from RTRW , and for no reason except they are all faces , I decided to plant them in a Face series . I hope you enjoy the hike, it is NOT short , but has beautiful things to see . In the clues , I include a half way easy exit , if you decide not to do the whole hike at once.
Things you do not need to know , the first two stamp faces are tiny but reside in a normal size box , large enough for a H.H. !The last two faces are well known , and a bit larger with room for H.H. as well .! Please be careful not to drop the tiny stamps. There are not log books in all the boxes . Have fun.

At the end of Meeting House Lane in Old Lyme you will find Champlain Farm South .Bring with you the wish for a great hike, you will have time to be amazed by the trees, awed by the rocks, charmed by the moss and challenged by the stream crossings .
Stop to look at the map board and look for the blue dot trail , you will not find it , for it is that new . However the trail is well marked with no chance to get lost .Enter the main trail and take the first trail on your right . It is white blazed . These four boxes are spaced so far apart that you might forget you are letterboxing ., so interesting is this trail .
After you cross a stream and the trail heads up , as it turns left , look to the right to a stone wall . Go to the wall and walk about 20 steps along the wall to a dead Cedar Tree [ you will pass a very interesting one ]. On the south side of the wall you might hear the GREEN THUMB yelling at you , he is in a cubby hole under the curved arm of the Cedar tree.
Back on the white trail , and walk among the many dead Cedar trees , I wonder what killed them. ?
Watch for a trail on the right . It is blazed white with a blue dot . Take that blue dot trail . It travels down and up , some steep climbs with many downed trees showing off their roots. When the trail goes over a stone wall and you see a huge stone ball boulder on the left . It is so BIG you can not miss it ,– walk along the wall until you are opposite the Ball Boulder , and on the other side of the wall, under a mossy covered rock is THE LITTLE GREEN MAN .Continue on the blue dot trail up and down and when you come to another pretty stream on your right and a high rock to the left, stop. before you cross the stream. It is very pretty and today had a little waterfall with a special ice butterfly that Veronica captured on film .. Climb up onto the large rock outcropping on the left to a tiny two sister Hemlock tree One sister has died . I wonder how long this little tree can live on top of this rock ? . Next to it behind a trap door is THE GREEN FACE that you will know .
Now cross the stream and up you go . A few climbs up and down and you are almost to the half way point . Soon , the blue dot trail splits and both are blazed the same. If you choose to end the hike here , take the blue dot straight and pass by any side trails until it ends at the main trail . Turn left back to your car . To continue on the Green Men Hike, bear right on the blue dot and climb up a zig zag to a pass aroung large bolder . Follow the blue dot trail until it ends at the intersection with the green dot . Take the White with green dot trail in an easterly/ southeasterly direction cross a stream on a stone bridge , up a little hill and stop . Go right through a small opening in a stone wall and take 16 paces to a small black Birch tree in the ledge . A well known face is waiting to the left of the black birch tree in a little cave .
Back on the trail , notice several arrows on trees , and intersections of a trail. Cross the stream on stones , and hike up hill in an easterly direction . This is the main trail , sometimes with blazes and sometimes not, but it is well traveled and twists here and there but goes / east / south back to the car .
Back at the parking lot, look again at the map board. Can you figure out where the blue dot trail travels.?
Thanks to Donutz and Veronica for without their sense of adventure, this series would not be there for you to enjoy .
Smile
