Shorty the Squirrel
For 15 years, Shorty was a panhandler and beggar around the Tyler courthouse. He made his way back and forth across the busy street to collect his treats from Miss Geneva Pillow who fed him daily. Visitors to the plaza hid peanuts in their pockets and laughed as Shorty searched for them. Loved by the community, he was made an honorary citizen of Tyler. Even Paul Harvey told his story on radio. Shorty died in 1963, and the citizens of Tyler honored their beloved friend with a monument in the Plaza. You can read more about Shorty in The Left No Monuments by Bob Bowman or at the following link: http://www.roadsideamerica.com/pet/squirrel.html
To find the box:
Drive downtown on Broadway. Park on the square and walk to the courthouse. With your back to the courthouse, walk across the street to the Plaza. Look at the Southeast corner in the raised bed for the monument to Shorty the Squirrel.
Walk west down the middle of the Plaza to the Wall of Memories. Standing at the north end of the Wall, walk 10 steps to the lamppost. Look in the southwest corner of the raised bed around the lamppost and find the box under the Asian Jasmine. Be careful as your reach down for the box, and also watch carefully because it can be a very busy area. After stamping in, please rehide the box well.
Thanks for paying honor to Shorty by looking for his box.
