3/24/10 Some wanted me to add that there are no logs in the first 4 boxes ---only in the last.

Get a trail map from:http://borntoexplore.org/trails/Roosevelt_Forest.htm
This also shows alternative ways to get into the forest. This may be important for two reasons. 1-the gate might be locked 2-all the signs on the way in have you spooked. The web site talks about it, and shows alternative ways in. The one I first used was Beaver Dam Road. If you take this you will come in on blue, meet orange. This is the place in the clues that come from the Spider box (#1) on your way to the Dragon fly (#2).

(It took me two hours to place these little guys)

Go to the main Parking lot from Peters Lane.

Going north up the trail/road, pass the picnic area on the left. At the y intersection stay left on the blue trail. You will come upon an unmarked trail on your right (if you have come up to the trail head with Yellow you went too far). This goes up the hill to a ledge overlooking a pit. From here take another 30 steps (on the trail). On your left will still be the pit. Look right and take another 10 steps to a six foot boulder with a symbol on it. Look down on right between two small rocks for the Spider box (#1).

Continue west, trail is vague. You will come up to a rock formation, which has a small cave on the west side. Down the little hill you will bump into the Yellow trail, take it left (if for some reason you got on the gas line trail, continue west until the yellow crosses it). Mountain Laurel. This will lead you into a trail head with blue, go right. Intersection with orange go left. Footbridge. From far end of foot bridge go 35 steps to a tree with an orange mark (and faint blue smiley face). Go another 45 steps, find orange marker on tree. About 3 steps behind tree will be upended roots. On the top of this root you will find the Dragonfly Letterbox. (if trail comes in from right, house on right, you went too far).

Continue on trail until trailhead with red. Go right. At 15 steps down is a rock with a lot of dots on it (to right). At about 40 steps is another 4ft boulder on right. 13 steps more brings you to a set of rocks that have broken off one another, on the left. There is a “first” cut, a “second” cut, and behind the third set of rocks is the Red Ant Letterbox.

Now you have a decision to make, the short way home or the longer way home. I think the longer adds 1/3 to ½ a mile more to the hike.

Short – Go back the way you came and stay on red. Go past the swamp (I liked the swamp!) about 30-40 yards and look up the hill to your right. There are white trail (trail not on map!) markings on the tree. Go up the hill. At the top is a stone platform, go beyond it to where the trail turns 90 degrees to the left. With your back still to the stone platform look right. You can see two boulders. The right one has a tree growing out of it, in a “V” (update 10/20/08- the "v" is gone or blown over). The left looks to have a mouth in it. In between there is a white board. Toward the back of the mouth rock is a crack on its right side. White board is 2-3 feet away. The Caterpillar Letterbox is “up” in the crack.

Long – Continue on red. When you hit trail head (intersection with blue trail), take a left. You will eventually come up to another trailhead with a white marker. This is to the left and is a set of stairs up. Follow trail until it takes a 90 degree turn right. From here you can see a stone platform in a small clearing. While standing in the turn, looking at the platform, look to your left. You can see two boulders. The right one has a tree growing out of it, in a “V”. The left looks to have a mouth in it. In between there is a white board. Toward the back of the mouth rock is a crack on its right side. White board is 2-3 feet away. The Caterpillar Letterbox is “up” in the crack.

Your more than half way home! (OK a lot more than half way home) Short way guys –go back to the red trail. Long way people, continue past stone platform on white, down hill, and rejoin red trail. Take right to continue journey. Go to next trail head. Take a left up hill on stairs (this is on a red trail). You will come to a trail split, white left, red right, and ancient radio tower in middle. Look right and slightly behind you. Go behind that large boulder to find the Blue Bug Box. When you are through, you can take either white or red to get to road, hang left for parking lot, you’re real close.

Enjoy!
