El Pinacate
Say “pee na KAH tay”
Pinacate beetles are nice company out in the desert when you’re walking by yourself. If you poke gently at them, they’ll stand on their heads for you and wave their back legs around.
The Sierra Pinacate, on the border just southwest of here, is an extraordinary volcanic desert of craters, cinder cones and lava flows.
South of Why, at milepost 56, there is a rocky hill on the east side of the highway that comes right down to the road. Pull off on the south side of this hill, the east side of the road, and park. If you come to the little pink shrine, you’ve come too far.
Keep your eyes open for pinacate beetles.
There is a barbwire fence that parallels the road, and climbs the hill. Follow the fence up the south side of the hill, to about halfway up where there is a barrel cactus right on the fence line. The box is at the base of this barrel cactus.
UPDATE from finder AK Inukshuk December 2019: "Barrel cactus is there, but has fallen over and is dying. The box is now just beyond the fallen cactus under a SPOR with a few white rocks on top.Just across the fence from the cactus is a palo verde tree.
Do watch out for stickery things, biting things and stinging things. Please rehide the box well.
This box has room for a HH.
Please let me know if this box needs attention. Please record your find at www.letterboxing.org/ or at www.atlasquest.com/
Have fun out there!
