This box is placed in honor of my grandma, Shirley June Merritt Patton. She was raised in Gravette and attended school here in the 1940's. She was a drum major in the high school band and wrote for the school paper. Her parents ran a dry cleaning business here for several years.

After graduating she married my grandfather and moved to Texas. She came back briefly in the early fifties while he was gone to Korea. When he returned they moved to California, and had four children. Her parents then lived on a farm outside of town, and they returned for visits.

In the 1997, My great grand parents were both in the eighties and had failing health. Shirley came home to take care of them. Her father passed on in 1998, and her mother in 1999. By then Shirley's health was failing also. One of my aunts came to help her and Shirley passed on in 2003.

Though not born in Arkansas, she always thought of Gravette as her home. So now for the box:

DIRECTIONS: You need to find Gravette on a map. It is located in the very top Northwest corner of Arkansas, 11 miles south of Noel Mo, and approx. 20 miles north of Siloam prings on Hwy 59.
When you come into town find Hillcrest Cemetery on the north side of town on Hwy. 59.
Use the southern entrance near the City of Gravette sign.
Go to the first curve to the left and find the George Maxon tomb, park here.
Stand facing the mauseleom, turn 180 degrees.
Looking out over the cemetery find the resting place of the Barrett's and walk forward.
Just before you get there you will see on the ground the Merritt resting place.
Stop here and look downhill.
You will see twin trees with a little evergreen tree at their feet.
Here you will find my Grandma's Butterfly.

If you come on flag day, veterans day or memorial day you can enjoy the avenue of flags here.
