You'll never view the world the same way after seeing it through the eyes of Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks), a simpleminded man who finds himself in the middle of nearly every major event of the 1960s and '70s.

The opening scene from Forrest Gump was filmed with the feather floating down from the steeple of the Independent Presbyterian Church on Bull Street in Savannah. Nearby is where Forrest Gump is sitting on a bench in Chippewa Square. The bench never existed, it was made of fiberglass and is now exhibited in the Savannah History Museum. The flow of traffic was altered to move in the opposite direction around the square as the bench scenes were being filmed.

Lake Mayer played no role in the filming of the movie but does have several lovely benches. Plan to spend time at Lake Mayer...you will NOT regret it! Walk counterclockwise on the walking trail from the statue at the entrance to the park. Pass the first bench and keep "runnin'." When you pass the large grassy area prior to the 2nd Gump-like bench head towards the large tree mass near the water. Two trees with multiple trunks are intertwined with a palmetto. This box 'o chocolates (another horrible movie reference) will be found where the largest trunk meets the ground.

As you rehide, please be as stealthy as Gump & Bubba in 'Nam. Lake Mayer is heavily populated! (This box was planted after the Bagger Vance box but lies before it on the trail.)

Forrest Gump is the third box in a series of 10 that highlight movies filmed in the Savannah area. On the inside cover of the first 9 boxes you will find a clue to the location of the final Savannah movie box...Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil!
