Distance: Approximately 1.0 miles round trip
Difficulty: Easy walk in high mountain altitude
Season: All year except when snowing
Directions: From Big Bear City, go to Baldwin Lake. Take Big Bear Blvd (Hwy 38) which turns into Shay Road. Shay Road then turns into Baldwin Lake Road. Travel around shoreline of Baldwin Lake, which is normally dry until you come to the intersestion of Baldwin Lake Road and Hwy 18. At Hwy 18, turn left and then turn right on Holcomb Valley Road. Follow this road for approximately 1/4 mile to an opening in the fence. There is a small wooden sign that reads "Critical Rare Habitat". This area is known as a pebbled plain and has great wild flowers in the spring. A short distance up the trail there will be a fork. Follow the trail up the left side of the fork. At that point you should be at the Pioneer Grave Site. This grave site is from the town of Doble that was across the highway. Continue following the trail up the hill on the right. If you're standing on the right side of the gravesite and look uphill you can spot the trail. It turns to the left after you are on the trail. Approximately a 1/4 mile up the hill, the trail begins to disappear or fade. Directly off the trail, look to the right for an old dead tree stump. The letterbox is at the bottom/rear of this dead stump.
