This box is planted along the Appalachian Trail at approximately the point the trail crosses over the Northeast Extension of the PA Turnpike. At this point, the trail is about 700 feet above the road, as the road heads through Blue Mountain via the "Lehigh Tunnel." I think the box is in Lehigh County, but it's so hard to tell along the AT. It may in fact be in Carbon County.

One way, presumably, to find this box would be to drive into the tunnel on the turnpike, stop your car right smack in the middle, and somehow dig up through the mountain using a very powerful drill of some sort. Perhaps you'd get lucky, and the box would literally fall into your lap. However, this way is phenomenally stupid, and probably breaks many, many state and federal laws. And will get you seriously injured and killed. Don't do it.

I recommend something more like this:

* Park at a cell phone tower, and head east to the next one. The box is there.

No, really.

Want more details? Okay:

* Start at the cell phone tower atop Blue Mountain on Lehigh Furnace Road. Park your car there. The road is dirt, but it's quite passable so long as it's not icy or snowy.

* Walk along the road just a few yards north of the tower, and then take the Appalachian Trail east. You do remember that the AT has white rectangular blazes, right?

* Continue for about 2.4 miles east to the next cell phone tower. It's not a particularly hard hike by Pennsylvania AT standards, but it's still a bit challenging. If you want something really fun but challenging, take the blue-blazed "south" trail. It will rejoin the AT in a mile. Either way works. I've hiked them both. The blue trail is very rocky and slower-going, but quite beautiful.

* Okay. I'll wait for you to reach that next tower. 2.4 miles.

There yet? No problem. I'll wait.

Hmm? Don't worry. You won't miss it. Honest. It's right on the trail. The white-blazed Appalachian Trail. You'll see it way before you get to it. Trust me.

There yet?

Good.

* Now, from the southwest corner of the cell phone tower fence, go five paces at 185* to a V-tree.

* Thence, 19 paces at 275* to a rock cave beneath a fallen tree. The box is hidden there.

Please rehide well.
