We are studying birds this year in our Girl Scout troop and are completing this Letterboxing is for the Birds! trail as part of our work toward our Bronze Award. This is #1 in the 8-box series. Bring your binoculars as well as your stamp!

The Hawk Watch Letterbox. March, April, and May are great months to hike this trail up to Hawk Watch International's spotting site. Raptors migrating north along the mountain chain all soar by this spot. A resident Golden Eagle pair can be observed for much of the summer.

To the Trailhead: From Albuquerque, I-40 east to Carnuel. East on NM 333 to Monticello Estates on north side of road. Turn in, jog right, then up hill. Turn left on Siempre Verde, then right continuing up hill. Road to Three Gun Springs trailhead veers left, then forks right. Look for Tres Pistolas sign.

To the letterbox: Hike up Three Gun Spring trail to the wilderness boundary. Hawk Watch trail then takes off to right. Well signed. Follow Hawk Watch trail up and over and up again, about 1 mile, until you come to a set of stairs with a wooden rail. At the bottom of the stairs look south to the double stacked "Big Nose Dude" rocks. Climb around to the SW side and look behind the triple stack of rocks. Enjoy Catie's carve!
