This letterbox was placed for the Dog Days at Double Lake Event, held at the Sam Houston National Forest’s Double Lake Recreation Area near Coldspring, Texas. Elvis never thought too much of me, mainly because I never caught a rabbit, so I was never a friend of his. He said I wasn’t high-class enough for him, but he sure used me for the inspiration for that old song of his. I decided to find some Four Legged Letterboxers to hang out with, the Best of the Show, you might say. I’ll show old swiver-hips who got class!

Directions:
If you’re going north from Houston, take U. S. Highway 59 to Cleveland and look for the Coldspring exit. Take FM 2025 north for about 15 miles to the park entrance on the right. Enter and pay your fee, then proceed, keeping right, and park by the swimming area.

To the box:
Go toward the swimming hole and take the Lakeshore Trail next to the lake, keeping the lake on your left. When you come to where the Lakeshore Trail intersects the Lone Star Trail (there’s a big trailhead sign), take the trail to the left of the sign. Walk past the clear-cut for the utility lines. You’ll come to an intersection with the hiking trail and the bike trail. Look for the sign that says “Hiker Trail—Closed to Wheeled Vehicles, Horses and Pack Stock”. So, you can leave your horses, mules and donkeys here, and also your dog if he’s packing your letterboxing gear. Continue on for 180 steps or so (who’s counting?). Look for a tree that resembles a coyote howling at the moon (use your imagination!). Don’t worry, it’s not really a coyote, It Ain’t Nothin’ But a Hound Dog!
