This box is missing and will not be replaced

Howling at 705

This box is in honor of Cub Scout Pack 705. We believe there is nothing more special we can provide here on Earth than Cub Scouting. The boys in scouting learn so much about respect for themselves, others and the world they live in.

A special thanks needs to go out to all the volunteers that make scouting happen. These guys and gals deal with difficulties and frustrations and do it with a gusto that can’t be matched.

As many know, Cub Scouting is based on Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Book. The boy, Mowgli, is accepted by the leader of the wolf Pack, Akela. Today, we would like to take you on a journey to find Akela. We thought there was no better place to start our journey than Wolf Creek Lake.

Directions to Wolf Creek Lake: From Loop 256 in Palestine take Sterne Avenue west (going away from town.) You will then take a right on Anderson County Road 420. When the road curves to the right, stay left and go down the road that says “entrance to Wolf Creek Lake.” From where you turn on 420 (from Sterne) to the lake is 1.5 miles.

To the box: Proceed to the dam and spillway. Go to the gate and stand with your back to it (facing the dam.) Pacing guide: It was 88 of my paces from the gate to the northeast end of the guardrail. Remember you count paces by every time your left foot strikes. You can compare your paces to mine to help with orienting yourself. Head southwest on the trail and follow the bend to the right. At the fork, take the trail that leads south. Follow the trail 34 paces to a holly tree on the left. Stop about 5 feet before you reach the holly and look to your right. Take a bearing of 225 degrees with your compass. This should direct you to a large pine with a smaller pine growing next to it. The two pines are very close to the creek drop off. The two trees make a V. You could say it’s an arrow pointing to the box, as the box is hidden at the base near where the trees meet and on the north side. Please re-hide carefully and as good or better than you found it, and as always watch out for poison ivy, snakes and other critters.

Good hunting!
