Inspiration Peak, in OtterTail County, MN, just off SR38 west of Urbank, is the 2nd highest point in Minnesota. The spot was well-known to Sinclair Lewis, who spent some time there meditating and perhaps gathering some mental pictures for his writings.

About the Peak, he wrote, "There's to be seen a glorious 20-mile circle of some 50 lakes scattered among fields and pastures, like sequins fallen on an old paisley shawl."

Follow the signs from SR 38 to the parking lot at the base of the climb. Head up the blacktop trail. Some benches along the way will let you rest during the 20-minute climb. Enjoy the view at the top, taking in what Sinclair Lewis saw, then head down the other trail.

Go on down past a bench on the right, down past an iron pipe railing, and keep to the hiking trail, not the snomobile trail. Watch for a 4' stump, slightly charred on the downhill side, about 6' off the trail on your right. Keep going on down the trail about 12 more yards, and find a 2' stump about 12' off the trail to the right. Inside is the Sinclair Lewis box, along with a first-finder's certificate inside for the first one there.

If it's a warm day, enjoy a cold drink of well water from the old-fashioned pump in the picnic area at the bottom of the trail, and the parking lot will be right there, also.
