One day in the middle of winter, as I was watching some birds at my birdfeeder through my kitchen window, I was inspired to do a new letterbox series. This is my goldfinch which is the first of 3 boxes in my "Feathered Friends" series.

Directions to the goldfinch:

Cross the Freeport bridge and immediately make a sharp right turn into Laneville. Follow the signs for the Butler-Freeport trail. You will be parking almost right under the Freeport bridge. Head out onto the trail. This is a great trail for walking or riding your bike. Walk until you see the 19 miles to Butler marker. Keep walking a short distance until you get to the first creek bed off to your left. There will be a brown split rail fence on both sides of the trail. At this point you will start climbing up the hill on the right hand side of the creek bed. there is a small visible path to go up. You will notice a large downed tree running almost parallel to the path that you are on and it will have an 8-ft. tall stump near it. the goldfinch is hiding in this area with a rock on top of it. I suggest using a stick to poke around and look for the box and not your hands just in case something living is also near that area. you are looking at about a two-mile walk round trip and the hill may be a little tough for small children. Happy letterboxing!
