Meg -- Little Women Come to Texas Series Box 1/5
Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women has been a favorite of many for over 100 years. When my California granddaughters came to visit, little women in their own right, we decided to plant a series of boxes to honor this loved author, and to commemorate their visit to Texas.
Alcott's Little Women explores the overcoming of character flaws. Each of the March girls displays a major character flaw: Meg, vanity; Jo, a hot temper; Beth, shyness; and Amy, selfishness. They overcome their flaws through lessons learned the hard way. Most of the flaws are in check for a time after lessons are learned, but even as young women the girls must work out these flaws in order to become mothers, wives, sisters, and citizens.
Margaret "Meg" March: At sixteen, she is the eldest sister. She is very pretty and somewhat vain about her looks, with smooth hair and small, white hands. She is the most responsible and helps run the household in her mother's absence. Meg also guards Amy from Jo when they have fights, just like Jo protects Beth. Meg learns to tolerate being poor, and eventually discovers that true worth does not lie with money. She falls in love with Mr. John Brooke, a tutor. She eventually marries Mr. Brooke and bears twin children, and a third child, Josephine (called "Josie"), who is mentioned in Little Men.
Directions:
The Meg Box is located near a peaceful lake that Meg would have enjoyed as a favorite picnic location. Park near Amy’s Ice Cream in the Arboretum area of Austin, off 183 and 360.
Clues:
You may want to stop for an ice cream, or save it for the return trip. Stroll on down the sidewalk, past the cows on the right. Keep walking to the overlook. You will see a sidewalk under the overlook. Take it to the left, where you will soon encounter a cement stone walk with black iron railings. Take that path all the way to the bottom, where you will find a tranquil lake.
Follow the sidewalk around the lake to the right (counter-clockwise) to the second set of picnic tables, under the caged light. With your back to the pond, stand to the right end of the 2nd table, the one farther from the water. With your back to the table (this will be the end without the bench) count 17 steps into the woods at a compass reading of 50 degrees, crossing a dry creek bed and up to the “steps.” Climb the two giant steps, then count 1/2 doz more steps into the woods to the cedar tree with two double trunks. Turn 90 degrees left, and walk upstream 10 steps, to a sleeping cedar tree with arms reaching toward the dry creek bed. Meg is nestled under a rock at the base of the sleeping tree, near a burned stump.
Please re-hide well and secure with rocks, as this area is prone to flooding and fast running water. We don’t want Meg to drown.
Meg’s favorite sister Amy is also hidden in this park.
