Status of Letterbox: ALive and Well on 3/1/09
The "Nice Rabbit Ears" letterbox is located in Hill Country SNA, south of Bandera, Texas. This park has excellent hiking trails, and great Horse riding trails. You can also mountain bike (which is what we did), but it can be difficult. The park is building a nice new Visitor Center, and does have camping.
Directions:
From Bandera, go south on Hwy 173. Soon, turn right on Hwy 1077 and go about 10 miles to the park at the very end of the road. Pull in and pay fee at Headquarters. Get Map. Once done, take the road next to the Headquarters, and go to parking for Trail 1. Park on the left at this parking area.
To the Letterbox:
From parking, the trail is on the left side. Go to the Trail 1 sign and the "Hill Country Wilderness Trail 2.5 Miles" sign. Take this trail to the next floppy trail marker, and go right on Trail 1, but start counting. Count 18 steps. Now go left off trail to the 1st oak tree. The letterbox is on the back side of this tree, under a rock pile.
