Mrs. Fiandaca’s class will get you started. Start at Samoset school in the back. You will see a sign for the beginning of the Monoosnoc Trail. Follow the trail until you see a yellow/green berry tree. It might not always have berries but it looks like a nice shade tree. Look around the tree for box #1.
Now you will go up a little hill then it will bear left at the top and you will see a stone wall ahead of you. Continue on the path, keeping the wall on your right. You will see the path take a sharp right do not go that way yet. You will see two stone walls intersect in front of you, continue straight ahead (off trail) to the stone wall in front of you, turn left and take nine paces. By the stone wall you will see a cluster of tangled trees, look deep inside the wall for box #2.
Ms. Nelson’s class wants you to go back to path and continue. Go through the opening in the stone wall past a fallen tree on the left and go straight ahead to the power lines. Turn around and go towards the stone wall. Look for some decomposed tree pieces on the ground. Then turn left and look for the orange rock, box #3 should be there.
Go back to the power lines and take the right path that follows the power lines. Follow that path and you will see a lot of tall green bushes with white berries on the right. Take a right and you will enter the area with a huge branch on the ground, find the trees that form a room. Look inside the room for box #4.
Continue on the trail along the power lines. Go past and down the root steps. Next, go past the bunch of bushes. Then, go past the wire tower. Before you go down into bush canyon, look for lots of rocks on the right. Box #5 will be around the rocks.
Continue down the path (be careful of pickers) until you see a giant boulder on your left. Turn around. There is a triangle shaped gap in between a bunch of bushes. The box #6 is deep in the (blue/white) berry bushes. Caution! Do not eat the berries!
Continue on the path until you see a stone wall perpendicular (to the right) of the path. Box #7 will be on the shelf of the tree that’s right in front of the stone wall. Continue back the power lines to the major intersection of the blue dot trail.
Ms. Bruno’s class wants you to take a right down the steep hill. If it has rained in the last few days be careful, it will be muddy and slippery. At the bottom you will cross a small muddy brook, then go up the hill on the other side. You will see a yellow marked trail on the right, follow that trail. Look on your right for a stone wall. You will see a fallen tree between four trees. Go over the fallen tree towards the stone wall where you will see the opening of the wall. Look to the right for box # 8.
Continue on the yellow trail. Look up and you will see a tree that looks haunted. Then you will see an old rotten log lying against a stone wall. Look around the log, there you will find box #9.
From there you will go to the second yellow dot on the right next to the “T” in the wall, next to a bunch of stones on the left. Look for a big tree with a bunch of sticks that look like a hut leaning against a tree. Look around the base of the tree for box # 10.
Keep going on the yellow trail until you find a HUGE tilted flat rock with lots of dead leaves on it. If you pass an apple tree brush pile you’ve gone too far. Starting at this rock take about eleven BIG paces towards the left of the apple tree brush pile. Directly behind a tree there will be a huge round boulder. If you stand on it you will see the back of the flat tilted rock. Under the end of the rock closest to the tree you will see lots of leaves squished into the edge. Brush away these leaves to find box # 11.
Go back to the trail and look forwards up the hill. You will see Sholan Farm Apple Orchard. Then turn around and you will see a yellow marker shaped like a person with an old sign above it. Turn left when you get to the tree you should hit a stone wall. There should be a moveable rock that has sticks and leaves on it. Look for box # 12 (Some of the leaves may have blown away). WARNING: Barbed Wire!! Follow the yellow trail back to the blue trail.
Mrs. Tapply’s class said you might want to start from the brook but you decide. Follow the blue trail from the brook (so take a right now if you trust your instincts). From the muddy brook follow the trail up the hill and the blue dots will take you left. Go straight over a log across the trail. Go over another log in the path. Continue going straight and there will be a rock in the middle of the trail with moss on it. Go straight then turn right and there will be another mossy rock in the middle of the trail be careful for slippery tree stumps in way. There will be a trail of rocks with squiggly line going through it and a flat rock that looks like a pizza. You will keep going straight and you will see a split tree on the left side. Next to the tree is a small boulder and another boulder on the other side of the trail. About 2-3 feet affront of the split tree there is a tree with a ditch on the front side of it. Look around and maybe even inside the ditch for box #13.
Keep following the blue dots; you are going to pass some huge rocks on the ground. Then you are going up a hill, keep straight. Go up a small hill on the right. Keep walking until you are in-between two hills before a sharp left. Then go up the right hill off the path. Take 14 steps straight. Take a left. You are going to be in the middle of three skinny trees. One of them has no branches. Look at the ground there is a fallen branch, look for box #14.
Go back to the trail and continue on. Partway down the hill look for the tree with the most moss before the tree with the blue dot. Go to the tree and take five steps to the right from the path. Go around the tree and take three steps towards the tree that fell and look for box # 15.
Walk on the path to a steep hill, crooked hill going up. Go down the hill and you will see a dried up brook. Go off the path on your left. You will see a U-shaped vine. Walk to it and walk 12 paces. You will see a tree that is fused into a huge rock. Look for a little space where something could hide and box # 16 should be right there. If you passed a thin tree with blue tape around it, you’ve gone too far.
Go back to the trail and go up the hill and take a right. Take 21 little hops forwards. Look for a dead white birch tree shaped like a “V”. Take seven giant steps forwards on the path. Look for another smaller V shaped tree on the path. It will be on the left of the path, look for Box # 17. Now it’s time to return all the way back to the power lines. Follow the blue blaze.
Mrs. Peralta’s class will wrap things up. From the muddy brook at the power lines go back up the hill and the path will go right and a quick left. There will be a trail to the left marked in red before the stone wall. Follow the red path right. You will go through another stone wall. When you are at the first brown, tall spooky, pointed tree; you will see a big gray mossy rock that has another rock on top of it. The rock on top is broken. Search for box # 18 there.
Continue on the red marked trail until you see rocks that look like stairs that cross the path. Go to the white birch tree with the red dot on it. Look for a tree that has 6 branches going up on the left from one trunk; it’s about 20 steps in from the birch tree. Look around the bottom of the tree in a pile of branches on the left for box # 19.
Continue on the red path, the path will take a sharp left. Part way on the curve, you’ll see a tree on the right that has a V-shaped branch and a bush next to it on the left side of the trail. Look for box #20.
Keep going on the red trail until you see a bunch of broken pine trees on your right, search around the ground. There is a giant broken tree on top of it. Box # 21 is under a bunch of leaves on the right.
Go down a steep hill and down another slope that curves left. Go to the five boulders on the left. Face the boulders and look to the right. Find box # 22. It’s time to head back. Follow the red trail to the blue trail and go right. This will bring you back to your car.
Fall Brook School’s 5th graders hope you enjoyed their work. Please email us to let us know if all our boxes are still there and if our clues were helpful.
