Difficulty: Easy, but Visibility may be a challenge.
Location: Next to the large Lowes Store, on E. State St.
Elevation: Flat: handicap attainable, about 6 ft high.
Hand-Carved stamp:Bring your own stamp pad, log book, stamp, oh, and a rag or towel to sit upon.

The 19 mile Adena HocHocking Bikepath runs between Nelsonville and Athens, and has multiple starting points. What you seek is generally near the EAST 1 mile marker. The zero point is at the Athens City Recreation Center...and numbering begins in both directions.

This box is hidden near the fenced-in pond immediately east of the Lowes store. An Athens/Athens County map, is available for free from the Visitor’s Bureau office on East State Street in Athens.

DIRECTIONS: Take US Route 50 to Athens. Turn into the parking lot at the eastern start of the HockHocking Bikepath, near the Pepsi Plant on East State Street. This terminus is about 1 mile west of the US 50 interchange for East State Street. (It's also 1.25 West of the zero point.) Look up the "Athens Bikepath Start" LB for more exact directions.

ALTERNATIVE APPROACH: Approach from the west along the Athens bikepath, just past Lowes. The pond will be on your left, away from the river. OR, just pull into the Lowes parking lot, and park in the extreme left back slot near the fire lane. Don't double park or leave your car for long: They tow. The fire lane signs say so.

NOTE: THIS PLACEMENT CHANGES, MAKING VISIBILITY EASIER WHEN LEAVES HAVE UNFOLDED: Take the bikepath from either direction until you spot the pond that is fenced in by chain link fence. Walk to the pair of yellow posts blocking the Lowes firelane. Now turn your back to Lowes.

You are facing the bikepath, the pond is on your left. Ahead of you, just off the bikepath is a thick fence row of large trees and bushes. Some landscaper has planted five or six ornimental trees (initially only 6-7 feet high) just in front of the forest trees, running the length of the fence.

Start counting those "ornimental trees". Stop at the second tree (a maple) and continue a few steps further east. What you seek is moved to the next Large multiple stemmed tree in the hedge row, ( not ornimental tree) to the east. ) The camo jar letterbox is placed in the fork of the tree. (It may not be obvious from this angle, but more easily viewed from walking along the bikepath, from either side.) Use caution. This is a very visible location with foot/bike traffic at any time!

Due to the thickness of the spring/summer growth, this jar is placed high enough that only an able-bodied adult is likely to be able to reach it. Too tall for a child. Unreachable to a handicapper. Sorry.

Please stamp and re-hide carefully. The bikepath is very busy at this end, and muggles may pass by regularly from both directions.
