Distance: Less than a mile to the box, but much scrambling involved.

Driving Directions: From the intersection of rt. 3 & 138 in Hope Valley, follow 138 west until you reach Wincheck Rd in Rockville. Take a left on Wincheck followed by another left onto Canonchet Rd. Drive .5 miles to North Road and follow it as it turns to gravel, 1 mile to parking area. Park at the Long and Ell Pond Natural Area.

Clues: From the parking area, follow the yellow blazes south through a beautiful rhodedendrum forest. There are quite a few boulders and ledges to scramble over. Go up the wooden steps to the sign pointing the way to Long Pond. Head east until you reach the famous ledge overlooking Long Pond. Follow the path to the left around the enormous erratic until you reach “The End of the Trail” times two. 48º and 25 direct paces from the northerly “end of the trail” sign is a rock on a rocky rise that overlooks a small cove on Long Pond. Look on the near side of the rock, to the left, tucked under the quartz. To be precise…
