Bunk Baxter: Alligator Wrestler
Orange County Arts & Cultural Affairs has hidden Public Art Caches near pieces of public art all around Orange County. This hunt was created in an effort to let more citizens experience public art through an exciting and adventurous journey around Orange County. We hope that, long after you track down one of our Caches, you will continue your search for art.
BUNK BAXTER: ALLIGATOR WRESTLER
For a piece of history, you will need to travel back in time to the N/S, E/W center of Orlando’s street system where a man sits outside wrestling an alligator. The sculptor, Scott Shaffer, is a Colorado native who uses his degree in Natural Sciences to full effect by creating incredibly detailed bronze animal sculptures. He began sculpting in 1987 and then became a full-time artist in 1994. His work was selected to be included in the Cypress Gardens Wildlife Sculpture Series for four consecutive years.
Take a good look at Bunk and the building he is standing in front of. In order to find this Cache, you must go inside the old courthouse. Enter through the glass doors and tell the attendant at the ticket desk you are looking for the Public Art Treasure Cache. Then, in a far corner of the lobby, find the monument dedicated to Orlando's "modern Bunk Baxter" who was the first man to ride a rocket into space. The cache is behind the obelisk.
Please place the Cache back exactly where you found it for the next hunter who comes along.
Please note the business hours: Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.
Please feel free to send an e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org or call us at (407) 836-5540 to let us know about your hunting experience. If you could not find the Cache, please let us know. Other cache clues can be found at www.ocfl.net/publicartcaches.
