Orange County Arts & Cultural Affairs has hidden Public Art Caches near pieces of public art all around Orange County. This hunt was created in an effort to let more citizens experience public art through an exciting and adventurous journey around Orange County. We hope that, long after you track down one of our Caches, you will continue your search for art.
THE GREAT AMERICAN HORSE
Leave Downtown Orlando, the commercial center of the area, and head into the tourist section. Take I-4 West (toward Tampa) for seven miles. Merge left for Exit 75A onto S Kirkman Rd (SR-435) toward International Drive. Continue for 1.2 miles and after the second light, take the ramp to the right onto Sand Lake Rd (SR-482). Cross immediately to the left hand lane and turn left onto Universal Blvd. You may see some horses grazing on your Left as you drive nearly a mile on this street. Turn right at the second light onto Convention Way just before you get to the Convention Center North/South Concourse. The horse you seek will be on your left at the intersection of International Drive just after you cross under a pedestrian overpass. It stands in front of the newer section of the Orange County Convention Center North/South Concourse. You may need to park behind the East/West Convention Center Concourse (you have to cross International Drive to get there) or at one of the adjacent hotels.
Great American Horse was sculpted by Roy Shifrin. It evokes images of weather vanes. Mr. Shifrin is the artist who also created The Leaper and Winged Runner at the Orange County Administration Center. While you are in the area of the Convention Center make sure you notice the sculptures of the panthers, deer, birds and manatee in front of the West Concourse. But back to the Great American Horse . . .
Standing alone, still in the wind, this horse waits for you. Look into his eyes and ask him to help show you the way to this Cache. Behind him is a covered “lane” under which one can escape the sun or the rain. Gallop up the sidewalk behind The Great American Horse until you are under this covering. When the sidewalk branches, follow the sidewalk going to the right. The stairs you soon encounter on your left, hide the Cache you seek. Before starting up the stairs, slip to the left past some blueberry bushes and find the Cache under the first step.
Please make sure to not damage the plants in the area. Place the Cache back exactly where you found it for the next hunter who comes along.
