Orange County Arts & Cultural Affairs has hidden Public Art Caches near pieces of public art all around Orange County. This hunt was created in an effort to let more citizens experience public art through an exciting and adventurous journey around Orange County. We hope that, long after you track down one of our Caches, you will continue your search for art.
ORPHAN
Christmas is celebrated here all year long. This Orphan likes to hide in the community’s famous fort. The Orphan is one of a small collection of bronze sculptures from the artist Hughlette “Tex” Wheeler, acquired by Orange County for their historic significance from his only daughter, Betty Wheeler Bass, whose family has been part of the town of Fort Christmas for generations. During the 1930s and early 1940s Tex Wheeler was considered one of the country’s best equine sculptors and was commissioned by many wealthy horse owners. He returned to Ft. Christmas where he continued to sculpt, despite debilitating arthritis, until his death in 1954.
Enter Fort Christmas through the wooden gate. Hidden from plain view, behind the Storehouse is where the Orphan rests. As you travel back in time to the early 1900’s, standing proud and tall on his horse in the center of a glass case is where you find the Orphan.
There are five other sculptures by Tex in this case. Pack Horse at the end of the case is looking toward the wall where a small window peeks out at a black iron fence. Beside the window is a display cabinet and on the other side (left side) of the cabinet is another small window. If you look sideways through it you can see a green bush by that black iron fence. In that bush is your box, nested between the fence and the spotlight under the Spanish moss. Leave the fort and go find it. Don't be obvious. You don't want other people notice you find the box. Remember to put the Spanish moss back over it when you return it to hiding.
