Orange County Arts & Cultural Affairs has hidden Public Art Caches near pieces of public art all around Orange County. This hunt was created in an effort to let more citizens experience public art through an exciting and adventurous journey around Orange County. We hope that, long after you track down one of our Caches, you will continue your search for art.

THE FROG

Perfectly suited for its spot next to the pond, this large, contemplative Frog crouches next to three friendly mushrooms. You are invited to sit on one and reminisce about life with The Frog. The whimsically-large figure was purchased by Orange County during District 6 Commissioner Butler's time in office. As the commissioner was a lover of frogs, this sculpture is a lasting tribute to her work in the district and continues to be a source of enjoyment for many, especially the children who come to Barnett Park.

From Downtown Orlando take Hwy 408 (the East/West Expressway) west for three miles and exit at Old Winter Garden Rd (CR-526). The exit will cost fifty cents. (To avoid the whopping 50 cent fee, take the slower and less scenic Hwy 50 from Downtown to the park). At the bottom of the ramp turn left on Old Winter Garden Road. At the first stoplight turn right on Mercy Drive. Turn left at the next light onto Colonial Dr (State Road 50). Continue through two traffic lights and take the next right (just past the Central Florida Fair grounds) at the sign that says “Barnett Park.” Leave the bustle of the street behind as you follow the winding, wavy Oleander-lined lane to the Recreation Center. (It winds more and gets wavier the further you go). At the stop sign turn right into the park. A few frog hops more at the next stop sign turn right toward the Recreation Center/Administration. You’ll find a large parking lot by the Center.

Walk behind the Administration Center, to the edge of the pond. There are two wooden bridges crossing parts of the pond. Take the bridge to the right (near the brown bulletin board). If the bridge is wet, make sure it is from rain and not from too many frogs! On the island in front of you is the bronze statue.

The Frog is trying to give you a hint to where this Cache lies. Walk six paces from him in the direction he is facing then turn and walk to the palm tree that is one pace to your right. Continue past the palm to the bottom of the “v” form by the bushes behind it. In the bushes, nestled under some mulch you will find what you are looking for. After you've returned the cache to its 'nest', please make sure it is covered with mulch or a palm front so that it is not clearly visible to anyone walking by.

Please feel free to send an e-mail to terry.olson@ocfl.net or call us at (407) 836-5540 to let us know about your hunting experience. If you could not find the cache, please let us know. Make sure you seal the cache and return it to its location where it is not easily seen unless one is looking there intentionally. Other cache clues can be found at www.ocfl.net/publicartcaches.
